The Latin American Studies program is thankful for the assistance and guidance provided by Dr. Catherine N. Axinn to its numerous Brazilian students. Axinn, a professor of international marketing and international business at Ohio University since 1991, has advised five Brazilian students and mentored them with their master’s thesis in international business. She said most of the LAS’s Brazilian students come from the UNA school in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and are likely to have a predilection for business. What’s more, Axinn has helped build a great rapport between Ohio University and UNA. The schools’ long-standing relationship, of more than 25 years, has been aided by Axinn’s hard work to bring UNA’s director to Ohio University in the past. |
Through Axinn’s dedication to both the students and education, she has visited Brazil 11 times while taking students to the country nine times. Further, she is committed to learning Portuguese and uses the language as a tool to help previous and current LAS students. Pedro Kayser, a 2007 graduate of the LAS program, was the first Brazilian student counseled by Axinn. She largely helped to interpolate some concepts within English business texts into Portuguese for Kayser’s thesis. Also, thanks to Axinn, previous LAS student Flavio Serpa worked directly in her business office to gain valuable experience while simultaneously helping Axinn with Portuguese.
Axinn’s education and international business highlights prove she is more than qualified to assist the LAS program. She completed all of her education at Michigan State University: B.A. in social science in 1971, M.A. in Transportation, Logistics and Distribution Systems in 1979, and a Ph.D. in international marketing in 1985. Her thesis was entitled An Examination of Factors that Influence Export Involvement. Before becoming a professor at Ohio University, Axinn taught at both Michigan State University and Syracuse.
One of Axinn’s proudest achievements is her role as co-founder and co-coordinator of the Consortium for International Marketing Research (CIMaR). The organization is an international network of more than 50 marketing scholars in 20 countries dedicated to the development and execution of cross-national research projects, which test the generalizability of core concepts in international business research. Aside from CIMaR, her international business experience is outstanding, as she has presented in countries such as Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Korea, Malaysia, Turkey, Spain and Great Britain, while leading MBA student consulting projects in Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa.
Because of her commitment to international business, Axinn has traveled to six of the seven continents, although she said she has no desire to travel to the seventh, Antarctica. Brazil and New Zealand rank among her favorite countries to visit, and she eagerly anticipates returning to Brazil in June for the Global Consulting program. The LAS program is privileged to receive tremendous support from Axinn, an individual extremely committed to the students and the international community.
